Both the number of new cases and the number of tests are the highest since the beginning of the pandemic.
In the 24 hours following the effects of Covid-19, 446 people died in Italy, the same number as the previous day, when the highest number of deaths was recorded between the end of April and the beginning of May. The total number of coronavirus victims in the country reached 40,638.
A total of 862,681 Italians have been diagnosed with coronavirus since the start of the pandemic.
In Lombardy, in the north of the country, the number of new cases has reached almost 10,000 in the last 24 hours. The region has been declared a “red zone”, where a state of emergency was declared since Friday, almost as severe as in spring. An exception is made only for kindergartens and elementary school classes that are still open.
New quarantine measures, including a curfew, went into effect across Italy on Friday.
