On Thursday, officers from the Vareliai border guard team of the SBGS Varėna border team in the village of Ašašininkai in the Varėna district discovered a smart path that leads to the nearest forest massif. From here to the border with Belarus, a couple of hundred meters.
Additional border guards were used to search for the criminals, and a Kapčiamiestis firebreak cynologist was called in with a German shepherd, Satu, to help.
A four-legged snake led a group of SBGS officials through the forest up to 6 kilometers deep in Lithuania, towards the town of Musteika in the Varėna district. It was here that the border guards saw three people. It turned out that two men, ages 21 and 26, and a 22-year-old woman are Belarusian citizens. The passports presented by them did not contain any sign of legal passage across the border between Lithuania and Belarus. The detainees had personal effects, some food.
It turned out that the 21 and 26-year-old boys and the 22-year-old girl are Belarusian citizens. The trio seeks political asylum in Lithuania.
The foreigners submitted applications to SBGS officials to grant temporary territorial asylum in Lithuania. Belarusian citizens are temporarily housed at the Raigard border checkpoint, where there are special facilities for such people. The aliens will be tested for COVID-19. Following this procedure and after receiving the results of the investigation, the issue of accommodation for foreigners will be resolved.
The Department of Migration, which examines asylum applications in Lithuania, has been informed about the detention.
A pre-trial investigation has been launched at the Varėna border team of the SBGS due to the illegal border crossing.
