The couple met through a single online dating site in the summer of 2018. At first, they interacted virtually for several months, then they met and began spending free time together. The new friend gave the woman gifts, gave money for various expenses, paid bills for dinners and hotels, according to a report from the Lithuanian Prosecutor’s Office.

Last summer, a resident of Panevėžys informed her husband that she was expecting their baby. Although the happy man wanted to raise the baby together, the woman claimed that she was not going to give birth and demanded 500 euros for an abortion. The man transferred the money, but he suspected a friend was trying to cheat him. Although he offered to accompany the woman to the doctor, she refused. She did not say when she had an abortion, outraged that the man had asked her to show confirming medical documents.

Suspected of becoming a victim of fraud, the man turned to the police. Officers from the Panevėžys City and District Police Station launched a pre-trial investigation, and the investigation was led by Prosecutor Lina Lomonienė of the Panevėžys District Prosecutor’s Office.

Both during the investigation and during the trial, the Panevėžys resident denied his guilt. According to her, in the summer of 2019 she felt the characteristics of a pregnant woman. Although the pregnancy test did not exactly confirm that she was pregnant, the woman began demanding money from a friend to terminate the pregnancy.

It wasn’t until much later, last November, that she had an abortion. A doctor who witnessed this procedure in court explained that the woman was 6-7 weeks pregnant. If she had become pregnant in July (as her friend claimed), she would not have been able to have an abortion in November. The Panevėžys resident paid 140 euros for the procedure.

According to prosecutor L. Lomonienė, who supported the state prosecution in court, the victim’s prudence helped prove Panevėžys guilty in this unusual case. The injured man kept the ex-girlfriend’s SMS, refused to put the cash in his home mailbox as the woman demanded, but transferred it by bank transfer, indicating the specific purpose.

This week, the Panevėžys District Court found Panevėžys guilty of fraud and fined him 70 MGL (3.5 thousand euros). The convicted victim was ordered to pay EUR 500 for pecuniary damage and EUR 150 for legal assistance provided by a lawyer.
