The improvements will be made by BAE Systems. This is just part of the work included in the € 500 million program to upgrade infantry fighting vehicles. Of course, the electronics, controls, and everything else that needs to be changed will keep the CV90 useful for decades to come.
The CV90 is a Swedish-designed infantry fighting machine. The first models (Mk. I and Mk. II) had 30 mm. automatic cannon, later – 35 or 40 mm guns. The 14-liter Scania engine enables the CV90 to reach 70 km / h. speed, and off-road, this machine is not bad. The CV90 weighs around 35 tonnes and is compact enough to be easy to transport and really helps in infantry patrols. The CV90 is used in Sweden, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Norway, Finland, Denmark and Estonia. CV90 users will only increase in the future.
The Norwegian CV90 has already patrolled Afghanistan, why with compound rubber tracks? It turns out that they have a number of advantages:
- Weight. The rubber tracks are lighter; in the case of the CV90, the difference in weight is almost a ton. This helps reduce the fuel consumption of the machine or releases weight that can be filled with additional armor, weaponry or equipment.
- Noise. Composite rubber tracks roll much quieter. The difference is especially noticeable inside the CV90, where the noise level is reduced by up to 65 percent with the help of rubber tracks. This will help reduce crew fatigue and hearing damage.
- Vibration. The rubber absorbs vibrations, which are not only unpleasant for the crew, but also damage the electronics.
All in all, the CV90 with compound rubber tracks will be quieter, more reliable and less tedious for the crew. This last factor may not seem so important to many anymore, but a tired crew is an inefficient crew. Tired people make more mistakes. In addition, it is necessary to protect the hearing of soldiers in peacetime.
The CV90 is likely to measure rubber tracks not only in the Netherlands, but also in other countries. It is likely that if such leads are reliable and effective, they will be extended to other military techniques.
