Nausėda: no place for unsafe nuclear power plants in Lithuania

“Belarus has not heard a call not to endanger the citizens of the European Union and to suspend the commissioning of the Astrava nuclear power plant. Therefore, in Lithuania the Law on Protection against Unsafe Nuclear Power Plants is being applied. There is no place for unsafe electricity produced in nuclear power plants in the Lithuanian market, ”writes G. Nausėda on Facebook.

According to him, it is necessary to work in a concentrated way so that electricity from unsafe nuclear plants in third countries does not enter not only the Lithuanian market, but also the EU market.

“Also to accelerate the implementation of synchronization with continental Europe, after which it was agreed by mutual agreement not to continue electricity trade with third countries,” the president stressed.

Lithuanian electricity transmission system operator Litgrid established zero capacity for commercial electricity flow from Belarus on Tuesday.

Litgrid representatives informed BNS that as of now no electricity is imported to the Baltic countries neither from Belarus nor from Russia, except for the Krasnodar region, with which Lithuania continues to trade.

Since Lithuania has not yet approved a new methodology for tripartite electricity trading, it is not yet clear how Latvia and Estonia, who approved it last week, will behave. It is not ruled out that these countries sign a bilateral methodology and begin to commercialize electricity through the Latvia-Russia connection.

The electricity systems of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia will be physically separated from Belarus and Russia in 2025 by synchronizing the networks with Western Europe.
