For the first time, the government will have a deputy prime minister who does not hide his homosexuality, and the position of chancellor is entrusted to a politician whose face is adorned with a traditional Maori tattoo.
The left-wing leader of the center, presenting her reformed cabinet after a landslide electoral victory, said her priorities for the second term would be to address the coronavirus pandemic and promote economic recovery.
Mr. Ardern appointed Grant Robertson as his deputy. He is the first Deputy Prime Minister of New Zealand to hide his homosexuality.
Women and the Maori community are also heavily represented in the redesigned 20-member cabinet. The Foreign Minister appointed Nanaia Mahuta, whose face is adorned with a long teaching: a traditional Maori female chin tattoo.
Ardern said he was proud of the diversity of his cabinet, but also emphasized that all members of the government had been appointed on merit.
“This is a deserving and talented cabinet of politicians, which is also extremely diverse,” said the 40-year-old prime minister.
“I think it’s important to emphasize that these people, who are appointed to these positions because of what they bring to the cabinet, also reflect New Zealand who elected them,” Ardern said.
Robertson, 49, has long been considered Ardern’s right-hand man. During his first term, he served as Minister of Finance and was a key strategist in his electoral campaign.
Mr. Robertson will also serve as Minister of Finance and Minister of Infrastructure. When the prime minister goes abroad, he will temporarily assume the powers of the head of government.
