Part of history

“Vilnius can be proud of the old surviving cemeteries of Rasai, Bernardinai, Saulė and Antakalnis, where part of the history of Vilnius, Lithuania and Poland and Europe is found. The Rasai Cemetery, established in 1801, and the Bernardine Cemetery, established in 1810, are the most valuable necropolises in Vilnius, attracting attention for the variety of tombstones, traditions formed over the centuries, panoramic views and the names of famous characters. Race Cemetery represents all of Lithuania and even Europe. It is, so to speak, the graveyard of the elite of the cultural and political life of society. This specific cultural heritage object, which reflects several centuries of history, is also important as a tourist attraction, interesting not only for us, but also for guests from European countries, especially neighboring Poland ”, says the uniqueness of this cemetery.

The Bernardine cemetery is naturally integrated into the life of the current surrounding neighborhoods: Užupis, Paupis, Old Town. They are special because the old plan of the cemetery and the buildings of the cemetery have survived: in the first nineteenth century. doors, guardhouse, columbariums built over the decades.

Among the reclining of eternal rest in the Bernardine cemetery are very famous people whose names we still know: the photographers Juozapas Čechavičius, Stanislovas Filibertas Fleury captured the images of Vilnius at that time. Mention should be made of Leon Borovskis, who also taught Adam Mickiewicz and Simon Daukantas literature, artists Vincentas Slendzinskis, Boleslovas and Kanutas Ruseckus, and others.

Three bells of trust

The Bernardine cemetery only took its first steps during the 19th century. Doors built at the beginning, to feel in the past. In the cemetery, near the gate, a bell tower was built on the fence, where the first three bells rang their way to the deceased and the accompanying procession. The cemetery path network has remained the same, the cemetery guard house, the central cemetery chapel, the cemetery consecration chapel, which marks the site of the first burial, and the eastern and western columbariums of the chapel are engraved on the cemetery fence.

And on the territory of the cemetery there are thick tombstones: the first survivors, built with bricks, thought of field stones, with which the Vilnius cemetery stands out, are obelisks, sculptures and crosses. 19th century In the late 19th century, concrete became very popular as a building material for tombstones. This 19th century. At the end of the 21st century, there was sadly progressive stuff. began to fade rapidly.

During the Soviet era, the Bernardine cemetery was to be destroyed. The metal fences for the graves were transported to scrap and many crosses were destroyed. Therefore, we are now responsible for ensuring that the graves of many personalities who have created and deserved history do not disappear and that future generations have the opportunity to experience the 19th century. traditions of the establishment of cemeteries, construction and burial of tombstones. This is also a great example of what an old cemetery should look like.

There are lessons to be learned from modern cemetery management: it is more important to emphasize not only flower beds, but records with tangible value on tombstones. This cemetery is a place to cultivate historical memory, serenity, inspiration, reflection on values.

The races are handled

Rasų Cemetery is not far behind in its history and interest, but in recent years it has received more attention: Vilnius City Municipality is completing a two-year Rasų Cemetery management project. As the condition of these cemeteries is better, more attention is needed today to the Bernardine Cemetery.
