The situation in the “Klaipėdos viltis” care community for people with intellectual disabilities is very worrying. All 30 districts fell ill here, leaving four healthy workers. The institution is asking for help.
Community leader Janina Tulabienė said there could not be any of the 4-5 employees who currently serve the disabled on any given day.
“We work one day, we rest the next. The situation is tense, but we are looking for solutions. They give us protective equipment, we are willing to pay the volunteers. Of course, if they ask for a reasonable amount,” said the interlocutor.
The Klaipeda Municipality cannot help this institution.
We can pay the same salary that we pay our employees. If you asked 40 euros per hour, it would not be possible for us.
“It is private, we can only help to find employees or volunteers. There are no programs that can support private institutions,” said Audronė Liesytė, Head of the Department of Social Support of Klaipėda Municipality.
“It would be great if three or four people came, we have already had two volunteers. We don’t have many demands, it would be good if people had some experience working with people with disabilities. But their job would only be to communicate, give food, take care of the pavilions, they are people with intellectual disabilities “, – said J. Tulabienė.
The institution had received several calls, but the volunteers did not show up on the agreed day.

Klaipėda residents, who want to help a community in a difficult situation, cite several reasons. Part comes with a good heart, realizing that the scale of the pandemic is expanding and that any resident will soon need the help of strangers.
“Our wards are not the ones who just lie, move, lie. We control them. We appeal to those who will understand the situation and reject personal fears,” said J. Tulabienė.
