“VPN is an institution of exceptional importance to the state. No shadow of reputation can fall upon its leader. Therefore, we can only reiterate our call to refrain from hasty intergovernmental appointments,” Gabrielius Landsbergis and Ingrida Šimonytė said in a comment sent to BNS.

“Any new appointment that occurs hastily and during a period of change of power undermines confidence and raises legitimate doubts as to whether it is not a clientelism, but will be exercised by suitable, competent and reputable people,” he said the party leader and candidate for prime minister.

I. Šimonytė and G. Landsbergis, the leaders of the National Union-Lithuanian Christian Democrats, which is forming a new center-right coalition, urged the outgoing rulers to refrain from new appointments and recruits earlier this week.

On Friday, Prime Minister S. Skvernel nominated CPO Director D. Vedrick for the position of head of the VPN.

The head of government met with D. Vedrick on Friday, according to the government, who is a candidate proposed by the presidency.

President Gitanas Nausėda intends to make a decision on the new head of the VPN early next week.

VPN has not had a permanent boss for a year, since October last year, when Diana Vilytė resigned from this position. The Office is temporarily headed by Deputy Director Jovita Petkuvienė.

By law, the head of the VPN is appointed by the country’s president on the recommendation of the prime minister for a period of four years.
