“We learned from the representatives of the State Border Guard Service that light transport, motivated by Covidu, is no longer allowed on the Lithuanian-Belarusian border,” Božena Zaborovska-Zdanovič, adviser to the interior minister, told BNS.

According to her, the Lithuanian representatives are trying to contact the Belarusian side to find out about the situation in detail.

Belarus has been protesting against authoritarian President Aliaksandr Lukashenko for more than two months.

Mr. Lukashenko commented enigmatically about Thursday’s events at the border: “I don’t want to speak publicly about what we are doing or will do at the border. And I need army people there.”

“We need to look again today, we did a lot when I said: we have to close the border. Close the wall, do not make it into an iron curtain, no one needs it. The border is a zone of friendship between nations. You see, we were challenged. What friendship here “But the nations are innocent” tut.by cited the Belarusian dictator.

On Thursday afternoon, Belarusians began to complain that they were not allowed to enter the country. The entrance of Ukraine, Poland, Latvia and Lithuania is completely closed. Cars can leave Belarus in these directions, but drivers are advised that they will not be allowed to enter when they return. tut.by.

Linkevičius: We have no official information about the closed border of Belarus

Foreign Minister Linas Linkevičius says Lithuania has not yet received official information from Minsk about the closure of the Belarusian border on Thursday afternoon, and diplomats are clarifying the situation.

“It just came to our knowledge then. There was no official, we can only see that closed wall. We received the information after a great effort through the border representatives, the explanations were that it was due to a pandemic,” said L. Linkevičius to BNS.

“As we understand it, it has to do with Lithuania, Poland, maybe Ukraine,” he added.

According to the minister, Belarus does not allow all passenger transport.

“Nobody is admitted, it does not matter. Belarusian or Lithuanian citizens, to my knowledge, there have been cases where Belarusians who have a permanent residence in Lithuania have not been admitted,” said the head of Lithuanian diplomacy.

According to L. Linkevičius, such a decision by Minsk is difficult to assess and interpret.

“The path is strange, because if such things exist, it has to be some kind of information. It is difficult to evaluate, knowing the situation in that country, here it can be interpreted in any way, whether for a pandemic or other reasons ”, said L. Linkevičius.

He also stated that the Lithuanian Embassy in Minsk had contacted the country’s services regarding the situation at the border and was awaiting information.

“Our embassy in Minsk has already asked, but has not yet received official information. We hope that the information will reach us with explanations,” said the foreign minister.

It was confirmed by Belarus itself

Belarusian authorities confirmed late Thursday that they had restricted entry through the border crossings of Lithuania, Latvia, Poland and Ukraine.

The State Border Guard Committee states that such decision was made due to the epidemiological situation.

“Due to the epidemiological situation in neighboring countries, Belarus temporarily restricts the entry of certain categories of natural persons through the land border crossings of Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and Ukraine,” the committee said in a statement.

It also states that these restrictions do not apply to diplomatic service personnel holding diplomatic or service passports, as well as to drivers of international road transport trips and crews of international train travel.
