Former Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevičius, elected to the Seimas in the Vilkaviškis single-member electoral district, admitted to tv3.lt that there was a conversation about joining the Liberal Movement faction.
“The conversation was one with the president of the Victoria Liberal Movement (Čmilyte-Nielsen – aut. Past). No decisions have been made yet. The conversation was quite constructive. I think your faction should first consider and make decisions,” said A. Butkevičius.
I would like to work on the Seimas Committee.
The politician entering the Seimas has also presented his proposals to the Liberal Movement and is now waiting for a response. If he joined the faction, the Liberal Movement would have 14 members in the Seimas.
“When the party president returns after self-isolation, I hope the conversation will continue, because there are more different proposals. So far, I do not give any response on other proposals, “said A. Butkevičius.
He would like to work on the Budget and Finance Committee: “I know that Professor Glaveck has been working there all the time, we have been working together since 1996. So the Economic Committee would be suitable for me, because I am constantly deepening my knowledge in this area. “.
Previously, A. Butkevičius belonged to the faction of the Social Democratic Labor Party, but went to the Joint Group of Members of the Seimas.
“A mixed group does not meet or meets very rarely. A mixed group never makes political decisions on one or another issue under discussion in the Seimas. In practice, you cannot implement your ideas and wishes, you are torturing yourself from within”, noted A. Butkevičius.
Čmilytė-Nielsen: “I spoke with many members of the Seimas”
Viktorija Čmilytė-Nielsen, the president of the Liberal Movement party, admitted to tv3.lt that that conversation with A. Butkevičius was on election night.
“On election night, I spoke with many newly elected or former Seimas members. I also spoke with Butkevičius, it was a courtesy conversation.
We will seek support for the decisions of the Liberal Movement and the ruling coalition, and among those politicians who do not belong to one or the other faction, as in this case, the former Prime Minister.
I think it is natural to talk to all politicians. Definitely more friends are better than enemies, ”the party president said, but did not specifically answer whether she had invited her group to join.
“It is convenient for all factions to strengthen during the political cycle. As is the interest of all parties: to grow and have as many followers as possible in their party ranks.
One should look through that prism that the most like-minded and understanding people at the Seimas are always an asset. Politicians need to dialogue with each other looking at different future scenarios ”, he added.
He promises to support the compatriot
V. Čmilytė-Nielsen stated that on the night of the elections a conversation also took place with the Deputy Mayor of Šiauliai, Domas Griškevičius, elected to the Seimas in the Saulė constituency.
“We are connected by the fact that we are both from Šiauliai. We care about Šiauliai matters,” he said.
D. Griškevičius, who was elected to the Seimas, initially stated that he intended to work in a mixed group of Seimas members, but did not rule out that he might join a faction later, but said he was in no rush to do so.
“You can talk to many people, but whatever I said during the election campaign, now I take the same position to work in the Mixed Group.
Clearly, the Mixed Group is not the same team, because there are a variety of colorful personalities that, in fact, I can hardly imagine myself working with. For example, Gražulis, “said the newly elected MP.
Mr. Griškevičius undertakes to support the program of the future Government and to support the decisions he deems appropriate.
“Victoria and I have known her for many years and I mentioned to her that if she is nominated for the Presidency of Seimas, she will definitely have my vote,” she said.
You can work in position and in opposition.
Vytautas Bakas, who was elected to the Seimas as an independent candidate in the Alytus constituency, stated that negotiations were ongoing, but as of yet there were no talks about joining either faction.
They only talk about support for government programs and budget issues. He said he was willing to work in a mixed group of Seimas members.
“I am open. I can work in a position and support the Government, and I can work in the opposition. I have worked there and there for four years, I know how the mechanisms work.
Of course, there are conversations and consultations. I open my priorities, saying the same in meetings with those who want to meet. It is still attractive. We are not talking about some wallets and things like that, we are talking about the principles themselves.
I am currently open to various suggestions. My priorities are also open: these are issues of the region and the Alytus region in order to give due attention. The second is national politics and judicial reform, ”said V. Bakas, noting that he had received calls from various factions.
Smaller parties don’t use it either
The former mayor of Biržai Valdemaras Valkiūnas, who was elected a member of the Seimas in the western S circunla constituency, stated that he had received offers to speak.
He said that he would first speak to the peasant farmer Jonas Jarutis: “First of all, I have to talk to my neighbor and respect our relationship, but that does not mean that I register somewhere.
It could also support the conservatives, but without those liberal extremists, without the Freedom Party. But I have my own program and I know what Lithuania needs, ”he said.
Petras Gražulis, elected from the Gargždai constituency, will also work in the Joint Group of Members of the Seimas. He said that he would certainly not receive an invitation from the leaders of the ruling coalition due to their different views, but says he had spoken with smaller parties.
“There was another conversation with the leaders of the smaller parties, but there were no specific speeches. Let’s wait and see what happens here. I’m definitely not running anywhere, “he replied.
Conservatives won the Seimas election on Sunday with 50 seats and began talks on a ruling center-right coalition with the Liberal Movement and the Freedom Party. These forces would have a fragile majority of 74 members in the Seimas. The Conservatives propose Ingrid Šimonytė as Prime Minister and invite other parties to meet as well.
