53.64 percent voted for P. Gražulis. Klaipėda district residents belonging to the Gargždai district. Conservative Rasa Petrauskienė, who was in the second round, collected 42.58 percent.
After the first round, when P. Gražulis’ victory in Gargždai attracted the attention of the whole of Lithuania, and the politician was quickly labeled “Gargždulis”, social media activists asked to focus on the second round.
The Gargždai district has become one of the most discussed on social media.
However, according to Gabrielė Burbulytė-Tsiskarishvili, a political scientist at Klaipėda University, the professor only testified that the difference between what is seen on social media and reality is great.
The fact that P. Gražulis won the election did not surprise political scientists at all.
Kai 15 minutes After the first round on Gargždų street, the journalist asked people why this politician was so popular, they did not hide it: the competition was too weak. “I did not vote for Peter, but in the second round I will probably have no choice. I don’t want conservatives, I don’t want Rasa. Already in the Seimas. I will vote against her. Alone,” said Gargždiškė, who did not want to reveal his name.
According to G.Burbulytė-Tsiskarishvili, the vote “against” but not “in favor” could have been one of the factors that determined the success of P. Gražulis.
“I was just not surprised that he won. He just didn’t think there was such an advantage. Looking at how the electoral districts voted, Gargždai is like a Lithuanian model. The districts closest to Klaipeda, in the city of Gargždai, were less supportive of P.Gražulis. The most rural, the Orientals, vote more not to the right, but against. Another factor is that we cannot rule out that you have an extraordinary experience, perhaps presented as funny as a circus performer. But he knows how to work, how to reach people, how to make contact. So in this case, the experience worked too. People saw that he was the same mortal, sinful, wanderer and made him even more attractive. He nominated himself, which is also attractive to people. There is no party behind him, which means that he is not accountable to anyone and that is attractive to some voters, ”said the political scientist.
According to the interlocutor, the parties should think carefully when nominating candidates in the Gargždai single-member electoral district.
In Gargždai, P. Gražulis was not defeated by the conservative Agnė Bilotaitė, who had experience at the Seimas. “I think that in this case Rasa Petrauskiene lacked charisma and counterweight: what can she offer besides being conservative? There had to be a struggle at the level of personalities, “said G.Burbulytė-Tsiskarishvili.
Dr Remigijus Riekašius, Associate Professor in the Department of Public Administration and Political Science at Klaipėda University, looking at Gargždai district, shared insights that on Sunday it became clear how many people in Klaipėda district do not like conservatives .
“This time, the strategy chosen by P. Gražulis to choose the Conservatives as the main objective from the beginning also worked. It was only necessary to extend before the second round jokes a story woven into the whole picture and horror tales about the Freedom Party. All of this has become a sufficiently motivating mix even for those for whom Petras himself is not a source of inspiration, ”wrote R. Riekašius on social media.
He called the irony the fact that P. Gražulis, a fighter against the system, will be one of the oldest politicians in this system from this period.
