The long-awaited showdown of the strongest Lithuanian clubs took place on Sunday at the Betsafe-LKL championship. Kaunas Žalgiris (5-1), who started badly, showed his advantage over the main rival after the break.
Martin Schiller’s pupils, who dominated in the third quarter, wrote the first defeat of the season to Vilnius basketball players “Rytas” (6-1) – 84:72 (16:24, 18:18, 28:10, 22:20).
After 24 minutes, the guests were still 42:48 behind, but they turned the game around in just 6 minutes, winning the match 20: 2.
The meeting was started with much more success by the capital’s team, supported by their fans, who scored the first ten points without responding, and went ahead 9: 7 after 9 minutes of play.
Awakened by a cold shower, the Žalgiris basketball players reached at 16:22 at the end of the first quarter, but at the beginning of the second quarter, Rytas regained a double-digit lead at 27:16.
Kaunas’ team did not allow opponents to rush forward. The teams played point by point for a long time, and after the break Žalgiris’ team ran 20: 2 and weighed 62:50.
In the last quarter, Rytas didn’t recreate the intrigue. After 33 minutes, Kaunas got a record 70:56 lead, and the rest of the time it was just a formality.
The end of the match was delayed by a slight push. Thomas Walkup stopped the last attack of “Rytas” with an unsportsmanlike foul, and Dovis Bičkauskis, angry with him, responded with a push in the back.
For the irruption of the emotions, non-sporting fouls were imposed on both basketball players.
