Kaunas Žalgiris landed Valencia basketball players 82:94 at Valencia on Thursday night and recorded his first loss in this season’s Euroleague competition.
The Krepsinis.net portal reviewed Žalgiris’ individual performance in this match and rated him with ratings.
# 0 Thomas Walkup (22 min, 3 points, 1 bounce, 4 reps, 1 pm, 0 pts). Rating – 4.
The American remembered only the shadow of his best version in this match. In attack, he not only struggled to organize the game, but also failed to exploit his pros against less physical players on the perimeter of rivals like Sam Van Rossom. Th.Walkup was caught in defending opponents, and even if he was shooting himself, he couldn’t hit him. On defense, the player could not catch the snipers of the illuminated opponents and failed to break the rules even in time. The best illustration of his performance was the three-point shot, after which the ball bounced off the backboard. Th.Walkup seems to be out of place and nothing like that general square we were used to seeing before.
# 4 Lukas Lekavičius (18 min., 9 pts, 3 reps., 5 res., 2 reps, 21 points). Rating – 8.
Only the player who got up from the bench began to score points and did not completely bother with the opponents who were trying against him. trapinti. Although L. Lekavičius’s numbers look pretty solid, the defender improved them significantly at the end of the fourth quarter, when the winner was already clear. In the most difficult moment of the third quarter, he was also suspended. If in the first half of the match “Žalgiris” was punished in the penalty area, in the second half the players on the Kaunas perimeter allowed their opponents to rage and this was one of the main problems in defense. However, L. Lekavičius was one of the most attractive Žalgiris players in this match.
Hayesas
# 10 Nigel Hayes (21 min., 6 pm, 1 res., 10 pm). Rating – 7.
Nigel Hayes made 15 “offside” pitches and this is a victory for the Valencian team. Although the American managed to hit a challenging two points and three points, when the attack time came to an end and the game stalled, the ball should not be in his hands. Hayes is not a shooter, and his arsenal of moves closer to the basket is not so wide that his role in offense is so important. On defense, he tried high but failed to stop Louiso Labeyrie as he brought the ball to the basket. Here, the gaps of “Žalgiris” in the positions of the numbers “third” and “fourth” became evident, because it was in them that the competitors had a great advantage.
# 13 Paulius Jankūnas (14 min., 2 points, 1 res. Per minute, 3 per minute, 0 useful points). Rating – 4.
P. Jankūnas seems mobile enough as a center, but too slow as a heavy edge. It is in this last position where the captain has to compete more. Q. Jankūnas doesn’t have much of a chance to defend against opponents like Derrick Wiliams, and long throws don’t drop on attack and the game can’t expand. Despite these shortcomings, P. Jankūnas showed his character in the fight in the penalty area, once breaking into the basket from the three-point line and finishing the attack with points.
# 21 Artūras Milaknis (20 min., 8 points, 3 res. Per minute, 1 per minute, 5 points). Rating – 6.
Although the sniper’s target fell at an important moment, A. Milaknis was one of those people who did not interfere with the opponents’ improved defense before the break. The impression is that only a few players knew how to move the ball in such situations and where to punish opponents. After the game, the veteran himself admitted that he could not win the Euroleague by attacking only Žalgiris and that the main problems were in defense. A. Milaknis himself did not shine there either and was late close outo situations and did not violate the rules in a timely manner.
Blonde
# 24 Augustine Rubitas (21 min., 12 points, 5 reps., 1 bl., 20 points). Rating – 9.
Statistically, the American played great matches and it can be agreed that he really was one of the best to represent Žalgiris, but there was also a flaw in his game. In attack, A. Rubitas managed well and hit the 6 colón points thrown, but there were considerable problems in defense. This time, those issues weren’t so much a shift against players on the opponent’s perimeter, but closer to the basket by stopping direct opponents. A.Rubitas played a lot in the center and then “Žalgiris” had a lot of problems under the basket. The top of the Valencian team dominated the Žalgiris penalty area and the fight lost for rebounds reflects this perfectly. The front-line players were Žalgiris’s main defense in the first half of the match.
# 31 Rokas Jokubaitis (16 min, 8 points, 1 rep, 1 p., 9 points). Rating – 7.
R. Jokubaitis was traditionally the first person to get up from the bench. Although it was difficult for him to get in at first (Vanja Marinkovičius missed and missed the first pitch), but then two long shots in a row were hit. It’s a shame that triples couldn’t be added in the second half of the game. After the break, R. Jokubaitis played little and, apart from a two-point hit, did not stand out. The Valencia defense did not allow R. Jokubaitis to create opportunities for his teammates: the player did not make any effective transfers for the first time this season.
# 32 Steve Vasturia (13 min., 6 pts, 1 bounce, 1 res., 2 pm, 5 pts). Rating – 6.
During the opening minutes, the American could have a much higher rating: in the first half, S.Vasturia made two 3-pointers and gave a great tone for the match, but then he was invisible and stood out with only two errors. These matches proved that “Žalgiris” desperately needs another striker. V. Vasturia plays “out of trouble” in this position and could be much more useful in the role of an attacking defender. It seems that S.Vasturia can really become a weapon of the Žalgiris people on the three-point line, but for that he needs to create more opportunities.
Grigonis
# 40 Marius Grigonis (30 min., 12 pts, 2 helpful votes, 1 answer, 2 credits, 15 helpful votes). Rating – 7.
In the first part of the match, M. Grigonis looked very solid and punished the opponents with long shots, but in the third part he disappeared completely and in 7 minutes of this quarter he attacked the basket only once and did so inaccurately. The angry defender returned to the pitch in the decisive half, but failed to direct that anger in the right direction. M. Grigonis once gave the ball to opponents on a flat spot and was hot on defense. The basketball player got his stats back only at the end of the match, when the winner of the match was already clear. However, the basketball player can be praised for fighting until the last whistle of the referee. This was also deficient for some Žalgiris in this match.
# 77 Joffrey Lauvergne (24 min, 11 pts, 4 rebounds, 1 pm, 7 pts). Rating – 5.
The French failed to direct their energy in the right direction and were often simply distracted in the square. Lauvergne played well in attack, but lacked precision. Even some skyscrapers failed to complete attacks in which everything seemed already done and were left only to score points. It was too difficult a task for center “Žagiris” to deal with Bojanas Dubljevičius on defense, and this high Kaunas club caused several problems. The opponent, who could attack from a distance, was too mobile an opponent, and “Žalgiris” simply didn’t have a weapon to stop him. We can be happy that J. Lauvergne looks better in “exit” situations, and in attack he has a pretty good reading of the game and is able to shoot the ball accurately and on time. This was especially evident during the first two halves.
