Statistics from the Robert Koch Institute for Communicable Diseases show that the latest increase in COVID-19 cases far exceeds the previous record recorded last Friday, when 7,830 cases of infection were detected in Germany.
About 7,595 people were infected Wednesday.
A press conference is scheduled for later Thursday, the institute announced.
In Germany, as in many other European countries, the number of COVID-19 cases has risen sharply in recent weeks.
In the wake of a new wave of coronavirus, officials tightened measures to combat the pandemic, such as banning large gatherings.
Local restrictions have also been introduced: masks are now mandatory on some busy streets in Berlin.
On Saturday, Chancellor Angela Merkel called on citizens to limit social ties and urged them to stay home.
“We are facing difficult months,” the chancellor warned during her weekly webcast. “What winter will be like, what our Christmas will be like, all this will determine the next days and weeks, will determine our behavior.”
In Germany, which has been praised by many for effectively stopping the pandemic in the spring, several records of the number of new cases have been recorded in recent days.
In total, at least 380,762 people have already been infected with the coronavirus in Germany, of which 9,875 have died.
