President G. Nausėda along with First Lady Diana Nausėdienė voted early Thursday in the capital’s Lukiškės Square.

The president had to choose between two candidates from the electoral district of New Vilnius: the conservative member of the Seimas Monika Navickienė and the Polish electoral campaign from Lithuania, candidate of the Union of Christian Families, Romualda Poševeckaja.

“It just came to our attention then. In the first round, I kept thinking for a while, and now there was nothing to think about. I made my decision very easily,” the head of state told reporters after the vote.

To whom he gave his vote, he did not specify, but named the criteria by which he decided. In this case, according to the head of state, the ideology was not important.

“First of all, let the person serve Lithuania, so that his honesty and decency are not in doubt. In this case, political imaginations and ideologies are secondary. I am still convinced that you can love Lithuania being a conservative, a social democrat, liberal and belonging to another party. We just imagined how to create Lithuania a little differently, but the most important thing is that we all love Lithuania and want something good for it, “commented G. Nausėda.

Then it will calculate and make its assumptions.

When asked if he had seen on the ballot the name of the candidate he had chosen in the first round of the Seimas elections, the president smiled, paused for a long time and then said: “You have to think … I no longer remember . I don’t have a chance to answer that, because then you will calculate and make your assumptions. “

“In both cases, I voted correctly, I am happy that I made my decision easily and clearly,” he added.

The president urged residents of towns or villages, both large and small, to actively express their will in the Seimas elections.

“Come and vote. Come choose your power. Not the power chosen by others, which will later have to be criticized, or we will say that it is not my power.

Residents of Vilnius, Varėna, Kaunas and Kavarskas, Klaipėda and Kalvarija have to come. Both Panevėžys and Pandėlis. Whether large or small towns and villages, people from all Lithuanian cities, they show civic initiative, there really is something to choose from and we can really build Lithuania.

“No matter what color the coalition to create Lithuania is, whether it is left or right, I will not start to predict it, the most important thing is not to remain indifferent,” said G. Nausėda.

On the spread of COVID-19: “It could be worse”

G. Nausėda also valued the measures approved by the Government to manage COVID-19 – the quarantine regime will come into force in twelve municipalities of the country as of Monday, there will be restrictions at the national level, for example, it is expected to reduce the hours of work from bars, cafes and other places to eat.

The president welcomed the government’s initiative, but at the same time considered that the local closure could have been avoided.

“I support measures to control coronavirus. The only problem is that we may have been able to achieve a better result in another way (traceability, isolation, compliance with security measures) and we should not make such drastic decisions today. The global experience shows that it is not necessarily possible to live in a situation where closure is natural.

Of course, it is possible to point the finger at countries where the situation is even worse, but I do not accept that approach. I interpret it in another way: such an exhibition does not mean that we are very good, but that it can be even worse with us than in other countries, ”said G. Nausėda.

He appealed to the public and called for the postponement of the cozy sitting in a group of friends, not to celebrate the birthdays of big children, to work to prevent the coronavirus from spreading in our immediate environment.

“Let’s follow the requirements that are established. Let’s not pay them by hand, saying that they are serious demands that they do not help at all,” said the President.
