“Whatever the scenario, I think it is very important to keep the UK as close to the European Union as possible,” Nausėda told reporters in Brussels.
He said that Europe must be prepared for both Brexit scenarios, and that if no deal is reached, a contingency plan is needed.
The President of Lithuania also thanked Michel Barnier, the European Union’s Brexite negotiator, for his efforts to reach a final agreement with the United Kingdom.
“Everyone is interested in reaching an agreement,” said the Lithuanian leader.
European Union officials have been warning more and more recently that the timetable for post-Brexit trade talks with the UK is drawing to a close.
The main topic of discussion is the rules to ensure a level playing field and the authorization of European Union fishermen to fish in British waters.
