Zita says she recovered letters addressed to her and her daughter that she didn’t even know existed. And for those letters, not too much, not too little, about 50 years! The woman says that some of the people who sent the letters are no longer even among the living, and the whole story of the disappearance and origin of the letters is enigmatic and difficult to understand.
A stranger’s visit
One of the last days of September, while Zita was spending time quietly at home, she heard a bell, not the door of her apartment, but the stairs of the house. A woman asked to be admitted, said she had brought letters. Zita let her in and when she saw her in the hallway she was surprised to see the postman, but an unknown woman approached her with two envelopes.
“The woman was middle-aged, she gave me two red unsealed envelopes. “Here for you and your daughter,” the jackets said, and I began to ask more, because I didn’t understand at all what the envelopes were here, and why they were not given to me by a postman, but by a stranger.
The woman did not show up, only said briefly that they had found a man in storage and that she was now returning them.
I asked him again, and how did those letters get to him? Well, then she said something that the woman with whom the letters were found died, and she herself, apparently related to whatever she is, now returns those letters to their true owners.
He also mentioned that the woman sewed the letters with red thread and made mailboxes, ”said Zita, taking many postcards out of her bag.
All postcards are old, some are cut to the dimensions of an imaginary box, and all sides are thickly tucked into any thick needle.
Many questions remain
Zita says the mysterious woman came back the next day, brought a few more postcards, and just when she avoided introducing herself or saying anything else, she pulled away.
“I did not sleep for a few days. This whole story upset me a lot. Do you need to understand that some postman apparently took prettier postcards for her? I mean, if they took mine, so did other people. And what mailboxes did he make there and for whom? You can see those postcards are ripped, but only one hand seems to have some kind of puncture marks left by the machine. I do not understand in any way.
Letters addressed to me, my daughter. There are letters from 1971, 1978. From friends, sisters … She is no longer alive, ”the woman complains, and then adds that at that time everyone only sent postcards. And the lost letter could have been the cause of a dispute or even a permanent breakdown in the relationship.
Who knows now what twists and turns of fate were affected by the letters addressed to Zita and not received in time?

Unfortunately, the story is too old to unravel. According to the representative of the Lithuanian Post Gintarė Kitovė, it will no longer be possible to grasp the extremes of the lost half-century-old correspondence.

According to G. Kitove, postcards sometimes fall apart these days too. The reasons for this are various. Inaccurate address, illegible text, messy mailbox. Nor can human error by postal workers be ruled out.
“Postcards, like any other unregistered letter or correspondence, are not traceable, so in the event of a disappearance it is difficult to determine at what point in the trip it was lost. If it has not disappeared and the recipient could not be delivered, the recipient must return it to the sender after 30 days.
On that occasion, we want to remind those who send handwritten letters or postcards that it is very important to write the complete and correct address of the recipient and not forget to write as clearly as possible so that it can be easily read and the letter reaches the recipient ”, recalls the Lithuanian Post specialist.
