Skvernel on Šapoka’s opinion on pension number 13: any other finance minister would have reacted similarly

Andrius Mazuronis, a member of a mixed group of Seimas members, recalled the divorced opinions of the ruling and V. Šapoka on pension number 13 during the government hour.

“When the finance minister declares that he wants to leave the government as a technocrat, after such declarations he would agree that he is leaving as a technocrat, or is still trying to leave as a politician,” the politician asked the prime minister.

In response to this question, the Prime Minister reiterated his view that the intersection with pension 13 is not out of the ordinary.

“The Minister, like all the other members of the Government, is moving forward and will leave this Government as a technocratic politician. Everyone has the right and the opportunity to express their opinion. As for the Finance Minister, it probably doesn’t matter who the Finance Minister was, is and probably will be … When it comes to finance, the most common response of any minister is: no, no, no. And it only happens once, yes ”, said the Prime Minister during the government hour in Seimas.

Mr Skvernel pointed out that the Minister of Finance, who had been repeatedly skeptical about the possibility of legalizing pension number 13, was behaving as he should. Simply, the Prime Minister stressed, the Finance Minister cannot speak on behalf of the Government.

“I think the minister is behaving as he should. Except for one thing: decisions are made by the Government and the Minister did not speak on behalf of the Government. He spoke on his own behalf. The final decision will be made by the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania ”Explained S. Skvernelis, adding with a half joke that V. Šapokas was worth reprimanding for his thoughts.
“I did not punish the minister for that speech, I do not have that right and that opportunity … Maybe I should have done something,” said the prime minister.

“I will add philosophically: that is what fascinates democracy”, V. Šapoka reacted to the Prime Minister’s comments expressed in the Seimas a little later.

V. Šapoka criticizes the proposal to introduce the thirteenth pension. According to him, long-term financial commitments should be avoided.

On Tuesday, President Gitan Nauseda said the proposed 13th pension is a less precise solution to the problem.
