This rare predatory mammal, listed in the Lithuanian Red Data Book, has not been recorded in the forests of the Žagarė Regional Park for several years. However, in September in the villages of Minčaičiai and Tarbūčiai, these animals even visited residents’ farms.
Residents turned to conservationists, the lynxes were captured and transported to a safe and habitable place.
According to the VSTT report, a lynx has been observed more than once roaming the farms of residents in the village of Minčaičiai. She slaughtered a sheep on one farm and some birds on another farmer. It was also captured in the photos by Saulius Mitrikas, an ecologist from the Žagarė Regional Park Directorate. After catching this lynx a week later, the second beast was captured in the village of Tarbūčiai.
According to experts, the unexpected appearance of the lynx is likely to signal an increase in the population of these mammals.
Another lynx was observed warming up in the sun near Žiuriai village during the day.
If a lynx, wolf or bear is detected, especially if there are remains of torn pets or dogs, residents are requested to report this to the appropriate department of the Association of Hunters and Fishermen or to the directorates of national, regional and national parks. state nature reserves.
If possible, residents are asked to take photos of torn animals, found traces or the predator itself, mark the location of the object on a map, and send this data by email.
It is estimated that between 90 and 100 lynx live in Lithuania. Hunting of these beasts was allowed for some time, but in 1979 their hunting was prohibited.
