Cichanouskaya became the winner of the John McCain award

“The violence must end and a peaceful transition process must begin to create a free Belarus. This is our duty and the only way forward,” said S. Cichanouskaja.

As soon as the first voting results were announced, mass protests began in Minsk and other Belarusian cities, which turned into clashes with the militia. Thousands of people were arrested and many protesters were injured.

The International Republican Institute is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping individual countries build democracy. It was previously headed by Republican Senator J. McCain, who died in 2018.

By the way, in 2016, the General Prosecutor’s Office of the Russian Federation adopted a resolution declaring the activities of this organization on the territory of Russia undesirable.
