Customs officers detained three shipments with ancient Greek and Roman armor and helmets at Vilnius airport

On Saturday, October 10, postal officials at the Vilnius Territorial Customs Airport inspected postal items ready for export. Officials were interested in discovering suspicious antiquities in three of them.

Four ancient metal pieces of armor were found in a shipment to a recipient in Great Britain: leggings.

An ancient soldier’s helmet was found in a shipment going to France. According to preliminary data, it is a Montefortin-type Roman helmet of Celtic origin, used by the Romans in the 3rd century. pr. Kr.

All three shipments were stopped by customs officials on suspicion of illegally shipping antiquities. To export movable cultural property and antiques from Lithuania, a permit is required from the Department of Cultural Heritage of the Ministry of Culture.
