Next week, limited speed warning signs will appear in Klaipeda’s Old Town. Until now, the streets of the old town have been allowed to run at a maximum speed of 30 km per hour.
This decision was made not only taking into account the comments of residents regarding the high level of noise and vibrations in the buildings, but also about the collapse of the Biržai Bridge.
Andrius Petraitis, a politician living in the old town, welcomed the decision of the local government and recalled that the residents of Tilt Had Street themselves had rebelled due to the heavy traffic below their windows and had made signs calling for driving slower .

“The buildings in the old town suffer from vibrations, which is a big problem. Slowing down won’t solve the problem, but maybe it will ease it. On the other hand, we ask the municipalities to pay attention to the fact that there are many attached structures hanging from the bridge, which also cause vibrations, ”said a Klaipeda resident.
According to him, congestion due to speed limits in the old town should not occur, because access to it is already restricted. “And very often I notice that the cars travel at a speed of 10 km per hour and the passengers enjoy the views of the old town,” said A. Petraitis.
According to him, perhaps the limited speed also contributes to safety: tourists often like to walk the streets, sometimes they lose vigilance.
Another old town resident, journalist Agnė Bukartaitė, drew attention to another problem: Pilies Street. It is popular to drive faster on this street, especially at night or in the evening. Not a single trip on this street, whose speed limit has not yet been touched, ended tragically.

According to him, problems in the old town could be solved by running public transport for at least a few hours. “The biggest problems are not caused by passenger cars, but by old and extended diesel buses, which weigh heavily on themselves,” M. Dzermeika is convinced.
How 15 minutes commented Rimantas Mockus, Head of the Department of Transportation of the Municipality, specific to the Old Quarter of the Port City. And now only public transportation and services and residents can take part of the streets. “It just came to our knowledge then. I don’t think there is congestion. There are not enough cars for it to appear,” said the specialist. According to him, the population constantly receives comments that the streets of the Old Town are driven at a speed higher than the allowed. “However, after inspections, it turns out this is what it looks like: the pavement is actually louder here, but it slows down,” Mockus explained.
