“I have initiated a plan for peaceful negotiations between three parties: (Belarus. – ELTA) government, civil society and foreign countries, including Russia and the EU. We started these negotiations, but Mr. Lukashenko was not willing to accept any proposals from abroad.
We now have a very limited margin to continue with these negotiation initiatives and we are moving to the second stage, sanctions. Yes, we must take tougher measures against the regime, because the regime does not want to cooperate, “said G. Nausėda.
However, the Lithuanian leader added that the situation in Belarus changes every day, so the international community must constantly be prepared for a peaceful solution to the conflict in Belarus.
Mr. Nausėda also highlighted that on August 9 the presidential elections in Belarus were not free and their result cannot be recognized.
“August 9 elections were not fair and democratic. Therefore, the result of those elections is not legitimate, regardless of who won those elections, Mr. Lukashenko or anyone else, the result is not legitimate because the elections are not legitimate. they were free, their results were manipulated, they were rigged. Now we are talking about Mr. Lukashenko as the leader of illegality and calling for new free and democratic elections in the future, “said the President of Lithuania.
“In this (new – ELTA) election, the people of Belarus will have the right and the opportunity to choose the leader they want. So far, this has not been possible, “he added.
As soon as the first election results were announced, mass protests began in Minsk and other Belarusian cities, which turned into clashes with the militia. Thousands of people were arrested and many protesters were injured.
