Mr Gaižauskas, who was elected in the Marijampolė single-member constituency in 2016, is seeking re-election.
Photos showing Mr. Gaižauskas getting out of the car at the Marijampolė Petras Kriaučiūnas Public Library, where the debate took place, 15 minutes sent by the reader.
It is not difficult to verify that the car is really the Chancellery of the Seimas, because the Seimas publishes the makes and registration numbers of all official cars on its website.
Members of the Seimas may use official transportation only for activities related to the performance of their duties. However, in this case D.Gaižauskas did not participate in the debate as a member of parliament or chairman of the committee, but as a candidate.
It is true that the “peasant” himself 15 minutes He said he was convinced this was how he communicated with voters in his constituency.
“All of us, members of the Seimas, go to the electorate and use a vehicle,” he said. I practice the least, I use the least. If I had traveled with my own transport, the Seimas would still pay for the trip. Because the members of the Seimas still get paid for all their trips.
We have to use it, because the car fleet is made for that.
D. Gaižauskas responded to the answer that perhaps he was not running as a member of the Seimas, but as a candidate: “No. I went to my constituency, because Marijampolė is my constituency, to meet my constituents. It’s all the time working with the voters and, look, V.Čmilytė-Nilsen, and so on, it is the leaders who use this service. I was able to have the same in four years, but practically did not use this service at all. It is now that there are fierce committee meetings and so forth, we have to combine, in a word, work and so on, well, because as chairman of the committee, I may have done it several times during my tenure and have taken advantage of it. Compared to others, I am at the end. “
The parliamentarian said that this possibility is foreseen in the Statute of the Seimas.
“We have to use it, because the car fleet is made for that. It has to serve the members of the Seimas, ”he said.
D.Gaižauskas emphasized that he is now a member of the Seimas and must use the cars of the parliamentary office.
The Statute of the Seimas establishes that the procedure for the use of official vehicles will be established by the Board of the Seimas.
A document approved by the board lists when MPs can use official cars. The affairs of Mr. Gaižauskas in Marijampolė hardly fit on this list.
Members of the Seimas can request cars in the parking lot of the office:
- carry out the tasks or assignments of the Seimas Board.
- performing the functions of vice president of the Seimas, the leader of the opposition of the Seimas, the powers of the committee, commission, faction or group of members of the Mixed Seimas of the Seimas.
- participate in official events of state and municipal institutions and agencies.
- receive foreign guests in the Seimas, participate in official meetings with official people of a foreign state, diplomats.
- participate in assemblies, conferences, seminars organized by Lithuania or other states, make official visits or together with delegations.
- when traveling to or from missions.
- in other cases, when the functions of the vice president of the Seimas, the leader of the opposition of the Seimas or the powers of the committee, commission, faction of the Seimas are carried out in accordance with the activities established in the Statute of the Seimas.
The “peasants” who came to power in 2016 were outraged by the money spent on MPs’ cars, as some members of the Seimas had come to rent cars with parliamentary funds to lease them and at the end of the term buy them at residual value.
Therefore, the “peasants” of the Seimas have modified the procedure, which does not allow renting cars for the funds allocated to parliamentary activities.
