On Sunday 20 September, officers from the Mobile Groups post of the Kaunas Territorial Customs stopped and searched the cars heading to Poland at the former border checkpoint in Kalvarija.

At around 4 p.m. Customs also stopped a Mercedes-Benz truck, and officials noted that the carrier had not paid the toll.

The driver of the tugboat, a Lithuanian national, told Mobile Groups post patrol that he was transporting a 15-ton shipment of plastic pipes to Poland, but officials decided to inspect the car. In reality, the pipes were only visible at the rear of the semi-trailer, but when the tractor side tarpaulin was discovered, customs officials immediately noticed the cigarette boxes.

It turned out that the pipe load was just a knockoff, covering a huge load of 1,400 boxes (700 thousand packs) of Belarusian “Minsk Capital” cigarettes hidden inside the semi-trailer. The value of the seized cigarettes (with taxes payable) exceeds 2.5 million. euros.

A pre-trial investigation into the illegal disposal of excise goods has been launched in the Kaunas section of the Criminal Customs Service, and the investigation is being conducted by the Kaunas Regional Prosecutor’s Office.

The driver was interrogated and subjected to a preventive detention measure: intensive care (with a collar).
