The Belarusian state news agency BelTA announces that Lukashenko has offered the governor of Russia’s Leningrad region, Alexander Drozdenko, to build a port together.
“According to the head of state, he discussed this issue with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Mr. Lukashenko noted that the money saved for the construction of the Belarusian nuclear power plant could be used for this purpose,” the state agency said in a release.
“We are talking a lot now and we are already working to change the supply logistics of our merchandise. We must agree. And there is only one problem: rail fares and transshipment at ports, “Lukashenko said.
Faced with pressure from the opposition and Western democracies following the controversial presidential elections in Belarus, Lukashenko threatened to divert Belarusian cargo transit from the Baltic states, which imposed sanctions on Minsk, on Russian ports late last month. Most of them are processed at the Klaipeda port.
Last week, the authoritarian president of Belarus clarified that this would happen if Russia offered similar conditions.
