If the three Baltic states continue to disagree on how to implement the European vs. Rail Baltica more rationally and quickly, Lithuania is considering building railways on its territory, says the Minister of Transport and Communications.
There is a risk and a threat that the joint Rail Raltica project may, if not plead, be suspended because of Lithuania. I will not hide, we are seriously analyzing whether it would not be faster, safer and more rational for Lithuania to implement the project independently on its territory, Jaroslav Narkeviius said at a press conference in Kaunas on Wednesday.
According to the minister, there is an additional organizational hurdle related to his management in the Baltic joint venture RB Rail. According to J. Narkeviius, Vilnius does not agree that a company not controlled by the state or a non-state operator should carry out work in the country.
He noted that Poland was implementing the project independently, in direct cooperation with the European Commission.
However, J. Narkeviius emphasized that this was his personal opinion, but that it was being disputed.
We need to take some more rigorous solutions because the Rail Baltica project is in a really tough situation, he said.
According to the minister, Lithuania is meeting its obligations and is ready to complete the work by 2026, as planned.
The total value of Rail Baltica in the Baltic States is approximately 5.8 billion. Eur, its length is 870 kilometers, and only in Lithuania 392 km, where the route runs from the Polish-Lithuanian border through Kaunas and Panev; In Latvia it will cross Riga, in Estonia Pärnu and Tallinn.
The railway is scheduled to be built in 2026.
