The merchant ship Ice Rose and a Russian frigate are said to have collided off the coast of Denmark. The incident was reported on Twitter by the Danish Armed Forces. The name of the frigate is not specified. According to unconfirmed data, it is a corvette of the Russian Baltic Fleet Kazanec with a crew of 80 people.
At the time of the collision, the Russian warship was not equipped with AIS, an automatic vessel identification system designed to provide information to one vessel about another and to inform coastal services of its whereabouts.
The Ice Rose is registered in the Marshall Islands. After the collision, both ships dropped anchor. A spokesman for the freighter said the Ice Rose’s hull had not been pierced, citing Officer Klaus Rasmussen at Berlingske.
SVT reported that the civilian ship belongs to the container class. There are no fuel oil leaks.
It is not clear why the collision occurred, but reports indicate that there was fog at the site. As the incident took place on the Danish side of the strait, the investigation is being led by the Danes.
To our knowledge, the country also requested Sweden’s assistance, and the Maritime Rescue Service dispatched several ships and Coast Guard personnel to the crash site.
Conflicting reports claim that both ships were moving during the collision.
