According to tut.by, J. Lazarčik, an activist with the Vesna human rights organization, was arrested on Thursday, but was released on Saturday afternoon. Another arrest of an opposition activist might not have garnered as much attention as it became clear that when she was arrested, officials also removed her young son, Artioma, from school.

A 1B grade student at Minsk High School 126 was pulled from the school, although the administration had the phone numbers of Artyom’s father and grandmother, but did not contact them.

They don’t usually touch detained children, but with Artyom it was different. The officials who removed him placed him in the Frundze District Orphanage.

On Saturday, the director of the Marina Stankevič orphanage explained to journalists that the boy had been taken to ensure his safety. She further explained that the issue of the activist’s maternity rights had been addressed in the past, so in such a situation, the girl was temporarily placed in a child care home. It was also explained that J. Lazarčik needed to provide the necessary documents and, as soon as it was done, the son would be handed over to the mother.

On Saturday afternoon, a member of the opposition was still walking through the doors of the Children’s Institution with his son, and a crowd of people, waiting for the applause of J. Lazarčik, was waiting for them. The opposition believes that such actions are intended to intimidate women.

This story moved not only the people of Minsk. Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki also reacted on Twitter on Saturday.

“I was surprised and moved by the news of the resumption of the child hostage by the Belarusian government. This act of barbarism must stop,” he wrote, urging the authorities to release the child immediately.
