The artist and author of the bronze sculpture Brad Downey presented his work on Tuesday near the city of Sevnica. It was in this small town in central Slovenia that Melania Trump grew up.
Downney CNN said it had long planned to produce a bronze version of the sculpture for display in the museum. However, when the wooden version of the sculpture was burned, he decided to build a bronze instead.
Downey said locals were very supportive of his sculpture idea, so the idea of replacing the burned sculpture with a bronze one was “a sacrifice to them.”
The work was inspired by propaganda monuments, such as those erected by Russian Bolshevik leader Vladimir Lenin after the 1917 revolution, Downey said, adding that the wooden sculpture was “a monument criticizing monumentalism.”
The above wooden sculpture was commissioned by R. Downney from local artist Ales Zupevco, better known as Maxi, who was born in the same hospital and the same year as Melania Trump.

Although Zupevc was not involved in the production of the bronze sculpture, Downney invited her to present it together at Tuesday’s ceremony.
Local police did not find anyone who burned the wooden sculpture, so there was speculation among locals that R. Downey himself could be responsible for this.

“It just came to our attention then. I really liked that sculpture,” he told CNN.
The burned sculpture is currently on display in the Slovenian town of Kropery.
Earlier, Downey told CNN that the sculpture’s creation was inspired by what he called an “anti-immigration narrative,” originating from the United States and Donald Trump in particular.
According to him, it is an “irony” that the president of the United States, who has made the suspension of immigration the cornerstone of his presidency, has married an immigrant whose mother tongue is not English.
