Just two weeks before the start of the European Cup, the swing in the team was completed. The retired Maccabi Club of Riches Lezion is being replaced by the Mornar Bar team.
The Montenegrin club has been running smoothly between Euroleague and FIBA tournaments in recent years. In 2016, the Bar Club made its debut in the FIBA Champions League, moved on to the European Cup in 2018 and returned to the embrace of FIBA last season.
Mornar will compete in Group B, together with another Montenegrin team from Podgorica Budučnost, Germani Basket from Brescia (Italy), Ratiopharm from Ulm (Germany), Unicaja from Malaga (Spain) and Metropolitans from Bologna (France).
Utena’s Juventus also applied for the vacant position of the Israeli club, but the Lithuanian candidacy was rejected because the arena did not comply. The arena at Utena can accommodate 2.5 thousand fans (the minimum requirement to play in the European Cup), the home of the Bar team – 3.5 thousand.
Mornar shared 4-5 places in the Adriatic League last season and claimed the most direct way to enter the European Cup, but was not invited. Club president George Pavicevicius then abruptly expressed his discontent.
“It just came to our notice then. If the European Cup leadership had acted like the Euroleague and left all the participants from last season, we would have nothing to say, but once that is done, there is only one word left to say. ‘shame’.
It is logical that in the future we will consider the issue of our participation in the Adriatic League, because now we do not see the purpose for which we have to participate in this tournament, where the results obtained on the field do not mean anything. Judging from the fact that we secured our place in the European Cup on the parquet, we formed a team for this tournament and we did not apply for the FIBA tournaments.
I will repeat once again that this decision, to put it mildly, is shameful, ”said D. Pavičevičius.
The Montenegrin club has even put together a solid lineup, which is not lacking in famous veterans: Milko Bjelica, Jacob Pullen and Kenny Gabriel.
