Maksimas Marcinkevičius, nicknamed Tesak, was sentenced to 10 years in prison for attacking people he considered drug traffickers.

He has led several far-right youth groups and has posed with swastikas.

He was best known for his “pedophile hunting” campaign against gay men. The activists lured them to meetings with teenagers, during which they attacked the victims and filmed everything.

Mr. Marcinkevičius also led a similar campaign against drug trafficking suspects.

“The body of the prisoner was found in the morning,” the Chelyabinsk section of the investigation committee said in a statement.

The statement confirms the details of the incident that appeared in the media, without directly mentioning the name of M. Marcinkevičius, who was imprisoned in Chelyabinsk.

“According to preliminary information, the man left a note,” investigators said, adding that he is investigating the circumstances of the incident. Death was reported to have been caused by a razor.

According to a channel registered in his name on the Telegram platform, the 36-year-old man was due to be released in May 2021.

According to the independent news portal Meduza, the relatives and lawyers of M. Marcinkevičius do not believe in the suicidal version. His lawyer said he learned from his client that security agents pressured him to confess to other alleged crimes, including murder, and that further investigations could be opened against him.

The man was convicted three times for inciting ethnic hatred and various other crimes.

In 2014, he was jailed for extremist videos and received an additional 10 years in prison for a clandestine campaign against drug traffickers.
