This was confirmed by the district mayor Valerijus Makūnas at a meeting held in the Kaunas district municipality on Monday, where the problems of poorly kept animals were discussed. The meeting was attended by representatives of the State Food and Veterinary Service (SFVS), the Municipality and the animal care organization Nuaras.
ELTA recalls that the problems became apparent after illegal kennels for dogs were discovered in various parts of Lithuania due to the efforts of the public, and on the night of September 10, in the village of Naujasodis in the Kaunas district, probably Lithuania’s largest dog collection operation took place.
Daiva Švelnienė, head of the Kaunas department of the State Food and Veterinary Service, said the SFVS had issued a permit for only two dogs in said kennel, and several dozen were found. Violeta Armolaitienė, an elderly woman from Karmėlava, confirmed that the animals were caged and in unsanitary conditions on a remote farm. “There was a mess and a terrible smell,” said the old man.
According to the agreement with the Kaunas District Municipality, 81 dogs went to the “Nuaras” animal care home. According to the director of the company Jurgita Gustaitienė, the dogs hardly barked on the farm, they were kept on bars, so their gait was altered. Specialists are now investigating whether the quadrupeds had a particularly injured vocal cord. A pre-trial investigation was launched into the Naujasodis case.
The situation of the UAB Švaistūnas mascots was also discussed at the meeting. The owners of this company raise pigs in the village of Gaižėnai (Ringaudai old age), which, according to representatives of SFVS, are also considered to be in unsuitable conditions. It should be noted that the company has already been fined for violating the animal keeping regulations. SFVS confirmed that a schedule has been developed for a rapid reduction in the number of pigs on the farm.
