Lithuanian Foreign Minister Linas Linkevičius and US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will sign a memorandum of understanding in Washington on Wednesday, L. Linkevičius’ media representative Rasa Jakilaitienė told BNS.
The US administration has been lobbying its allies in recent years to prevent Chinese telecoms giant Huawei from participating in the development of 5G networks.
R.Jakilaitienė told BNS that the agreement will not mention specific states or companies.
The United States has previously signed similar declarations with other Baltic countries and Poland. They agreed to assess whether technology providers are not controlled by foreign governments where there is no independent judicial oversight.
In an interview with BNS in February this year, US Ambassador Robert Gilchrist said that the United States hopes that Lithuania will address 5G security and assess the threats posed by China when implementing the technology.
Lithuanian military intelligence has identified Huawei’s involvement in the development of the 5G network as a risk factor due to the laws of Communist China, which force companies to share information with the government.
Huawei, for its part, says it cares about cyber security and complies with international regulations in this area, and no government agency or outside organization owns Huawei’s shares or controls the company in any way.
The reliability of equipment manufacturers is not currently the only challenge in Lithuania to implement 5G technology; Difficult negotiations with Russia are currently underway on the conditions for the use of radio frequencies at the border.
During the meeting with M. Pompeo, L. Linkevičius will also discuss bilateral relations and the situation in Belarus, R. Jakilaitienė told BNS.
