Belarus’s emphasis on Lithuania: it goes beyond common sense

The Presidium of the Council of the Republic issued the statement in response to a resolution of the Lithuanian Seimas calling Sviatlana Cichanouskaya “elected leader of the Belarusian people” and the Coordination Council convened by him as the only legitimate representatives of the Belarusian nation.

“The resolution of the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania of September 10, 2020 does not comply with the spirit of good neighborliness between our countries and the universal parliamentary principles,” the statement said.

“By adopting this document, the Lithuanian parliamentarians are severely interfering in the internal affairs of the Republic of Belarus and demonstrating an open disrespect for the sovereign right of the Belarusian people to independently elect leaders and determine the direction of their country’s development.” added the parliamentarians.

“The attempt by the Lithuanian MPs to appoint the ‘leader of the Belarusian people’ really goes beyond common sense,” the statement said.

The upper house of the National Assembly affirms that such actions “are provocative and unacceptable, they violate the norms of international law and cross-border communication, as well as acceptable parliamentary practice.”

“Calls to pressure the Belarusian government to change the domestic and foreign policies of the Republic of Belarus are particularly unacceptable,” the council said.

The institution also stated that relations between Belarus and Lithuania can develop fruitfully “only on the basis of mutual respect, full and constructive cooperation, including inter-parliamentary interaction, as well as non-interference in internal affairs.”

The Belarusian parliament has almost no real power, as all power is concentrated in the hands of President Lukashenko. Lithuania and other countries of the western community do not recognize Lukashenko’s victory in the August 9 elections and are calling for new fair elections.

Cichanouskaya says he won the election. After the elections due to pressure from the government, she came to Lithuania.
