After more than a month of unrest in Belarus, diplomats not only from Lithuania but also from the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Sweden, Austria, Romania and other countries arrived at the home of S. Aleksijevič on Wednesday.

A. Pulokas said that he learned about possible attempts to arrest the writer through the popular social network “Telegram” in Belarus and the friends of S. Aleksijevič.

“We have received messages through all channels that someone is knocking on the door of Sviatlan’s apartment and there are suspicions that it may be officers of the KGB, the militia or other power structures,” said the ambassador.

Aleksiyevich is a member of the Coordinating Council of political and social activists who seek to dialogue with the Alexander Lukashenko regime about the new presidential elections in Belarus.

The presidential election took place in August. The electoral commission, loyal to the regime, announced then that Lukashenko had won them overwhelmingly, but the opposition did not recognize the results of the vote and considered them false.

The Nobel Prize is the last member of the Presidium of the Coordinating Council, who has not yet been arrested or deported from Belarus.

We become a kind of shield.

Maxim Znak, a member of the council presidium, was arrested Wednesday morning before officers knocked on his home door.

The Lithuanian ambassador said that upon reaching S. Aleksijevič, the diplomats had already encountered a large group of people, friends of the writer herself, who were willing to help her avoid possible arrest.

“We became a kind of shield and there were no opportunities for representatives of the force structures to come to Sviatlan and take any action,” said A. Pulokas.

He stated that he did not feel any fear or any other emotions at the time.

“No one thought of any feelings at the time. We did what seemed necessary, and that’s it, “said the diplomat.

Invited to Lithuania

During his visit to Aleksiyevich, the diplomats discussed the possibilities of ensuring his safety.

According to the ambassador, among those opportunities was an offer for her to come to Lithuania.

“We offered Sviatlan all possible help, maybe to come to Lithuania, maybe to come to the embassy,” said A. Pulokas.

However, he stated that Aleksiyevich has decided at this time to remain in Belarus and continue to participate in public life.

“He is firmly committed to staying, to being with the people of Belarus and to playing that important role as the authority of the nation (…) and as the number one representative of Belarusian society abroad, where he has enormous fame, enormous popularity. and responsibility “. This is the Lithuanian ambassador in Minsk speaking.

According to him, Aleksiyevich was allowed to be at home on Thursday and diplomats from the European Union countries agreed to stand guard at her apartment to protect the writer from force structures.

“A rather strange situation continues and we hope that the official side of the Belarusian power structure will not dare to take any drastic action against it,” said A. Pulokas.

Sviatlana Cichanouskaja, who participated in the August presidential elections, arrived in Lithuania immediately.

Expert: wait for a new election – naive

Lukashenko forced himself to raise his eyebrows this week, saying he could have “sat down.”

He also spoke for the first time about the possibility of holding early presidential elections if the constitutional reform proposed by the country is implemented.

Belarusian political scientist Andrei Yeliseyev doubts it.

“I do not take this as a serious statement. It is just a stylistic measure, it is an attempt to reduce the political mobilization of society, to make empty promises, and then make insignificant changes to the Constitution that do not reduce its power in any way”, said the head of the EAST Research Center.

According to him, the situation in Belarus is currently stagnant, as the majority of the country’s population does not support Lukashenko, but with the support of the force structures, he can continue to rule the country.

Yeliseyev also claimed that the Kremlin would continue to support Lukashenko, at least for the time being, despite some ideas that Russia wanted to “seize” the current leader of Belarus.
