On Thursday, the President of Lithuania participated in a remote European Council (CEC) preparatory conference in preparation for the EVS meeting to be held later this month, reports the Presidency.
At the beginning of the meeting, Mr. Nausėda suggested that EVS President Charles Michel include the question of Belarus on the agenda of the European Council to be held from 24 to 25 September. Ch. Michel highlighted the importance of the situation in Belarus and assured that he would consider this possibility.
“Unfortunately, the situation in Belarus does not change. The brutal use of force, human rights violations and dealing with the leaders of the Coordinating Council continue. It is necessary that all EU leaders assess the situation and come to an agreement on the next steps, “the report quotes President G. Nausėda.
Speaking about the EU’s relations with China, Mr. Nausėda emphasized the need to anticipate the dynamics of EU-China relations in the context of changing economic and geopolitical circumstances.
“The EU must continue to be guided by democratic values, respect for human rights and freedoms, and a level playing field in trade with China,” he said.
The president noted the need to increase the economic resilience of the EU vis-à-vis third countries and ensure the sustainability of industrial supply chains.
The Lithuanian leader also expressed his solidarity with Cyprus and Greece and called on Turkey to refrain from unilateral actions in the Mediterranean.
Together with the President of Lithuania, the leaders of Germany, Austria, Denmark, Finland, Croatia, Slovakia and Belgium participated in Thursday’s debate.
