The restoration of the Klaipėda Castle site at the mouth of the Dane River is a longstanding aspiration of Klaipėda residents. The castle was shaped like a single star. These castles were built in northern Europe.

The castle site is already recognized as an object of national importance. The eastern and northern part of the castle site has already been restored. The approximately 47-meter high tower would become the highlight of the historic castle.

Last year, Klaipėda City Council announced the signing of an agreement with the company “Port City Project” on the preparation of a technical project for the restoration of the great castle tower.

The tower, built in the late 16th century, is considered one of the oldest examples of Renaissance masonry in Lithuania. Historical sources testify that this tower also had a prison function.

The tower gradually collapsed in the late 19th century, as did the entire castle.

“The design of the great castle tower was discussed in public during the quarantine. The latest solutions are now being presented to display an authentic cloak. If we get a building permit this year, it would be possible to start construction next year and finish it in a year and a half, ”said Ričardas Zulcas, Senior Advisor to the Deputy Director of the Klaipėda City Municipal Administration.

It is planned to organize various exhibitions and virtual events in the tower. Restoring the tower would uncouple about 1.5 million. euros.

As architect Algirdas Stripinis said in the presentation, the tower is designed according to historical data, but the interior is planned to be modern: the seventh floor would have a glass floor and an elevator would work. The designers propose to build the tower without heating, as this would save money and simplify the requirements.

Historians and architects who attended the presentation agreed that the tower should reflect more authenticity. “It should not become just another observation tower, as is now popular in Lithuania,” emphasized architect Edmundas Andrijauskas. According to prof. skilled. Dr. Vladas Žulkus, authentic details, of which there are not many, justify why the tower is being rebuilt in that particular place and not in another.
