The Ministry of Transport and Communications proposes to restore the railway line to Grodno by installing a new connection to Druskininkai. This idea was presented by the Minister of Transport and Communications Jaroslav Narkevičius at an informal ministerial meeting.
According to the Minister, the renewed rail connection to Grodno would promote tourism and freight, and would have economic advantages. The Druskininkai complex would be more accessible to residents of other Lithuanian cities and the neighboring city of Grodno in Belarus, would allow to attract additional tourist flows and raise additional revenue for the state budget.
After the restoration of the railway section Marcinkonys – Druskininkai – the state border with Belarus, it is expected that residents of our country and foreign tourists will be encouraged to travel on new train routes Vilnius – Druskininkai, Vilnius – Grodno, Druskininkai – Grodno , Varėna – Druskininkai.
This line is estimated to carry around 180,000 passengers and 1.5 million passengers a year. tons of cargo. The railway line rehabilitation project could be implemented in 4 years.
