According to the mayor of Kretinga, Antanas Kalnius, this is the first detailed archaeological investigation of this scale in this city. “An area of 2,600 square meters will be inspected. To date, more investigations have been carried out in the park near the mansion. Ancient Kretinga was discovered here, around the 17th century. More detailed investigations will be carried out in the section of JKChodkevičius to Birutės Street. At this point, the completion of the street reconstruction works will take time and will only be completed next year. That is why we want to apologize to all residents and newcomers of Kretinga, “said the mayor. Si It is necessary, detailed archaeological research has increased and the cost of rebuilding the entire street is approximately 400 thousand and will amount to about 4.5 million euros.

Simonas Sprindys, director of the Research Institute of the Past, said that this archaeological investigation was special because it touched for the first time the cultural layer of the old town, allowing us to see how ancient Kretinga was built and what the network of streets was like.

“We don’t have sensations yet, but now we have a clearer picture of what Kretinga was like in the 17th-19th centuries,” said the archaeologist.

It has already been established that in this place, next to the wooden architecture, there were also brick buildings, the streets were much narrower. Some of the finds suggest that the city was quite ornate, as some of the finds are reminiscent of metropolitan culture. The main finds are domestic, several coins were found.

An almost intact 17th century tile was discovered, decorated with motifs reminiscent of children or angels. Among the finds: pot fragments, pipe motif, coins.
