Prime Minister Landsberg offers no hurry to Belarus: the president in charge of foreign policy

“I believe that the main official who shapes and implements foreign policy is the President of the Republic of Lithuania. We are working closely with him on this. If the president sees that some additional measures are needed, he can also give his opinion. However, the Seimas should also listen, because, as I mentioned, the President, together with the Government, the Seimas, is also involved in foreign policy. Therefore, common solutions must be coordinated here, “said S. Skvernelis on Wednesday. .

The Prime Minister also proposes that the Seimas adopt common positions on Belarus before the plenary session. According to him, this would avoid fruitless discussions.

“If we talk about this area (foreign policy. – ELTA), where many political parties agree, then in the Seimas such a discussion could be, but perhaps not in the plenary. And among political forces, political groups, to find a common solution, not to start an unsuccessful debate in plenary, as is often the case, he said.

“We would like us to agree on the most important foreign policy issues first and only then try to formalize them,” Skvernelis emphasized.

Conservative Gabrielius Landsbergis, leader of the Seimas opposition, said on Tuesday that the Seimas fall session will aim to toughen the resolution adopted in mid-August on the presidential elections in Belarus. The Conservative leader is convinced that Seimas must continue to demonstrate its leadership on the situation in Belarus.

Mr. Landsbergis states that the resolution will declare that Lithuania not only does not recognize Mr. Lukashenko’s newly elected president, but also does not recognize the international agreements he is concluding. The opposition leader also reports that the second point of the resolution would support the expanded list of sanctioned Belarusian officials provided by L. Linkevičius.

The first provision is related to the next meeting between Lukashenko and Putin, during which the signing of the last points of the common union or the common state can be discussed. In my opinion, the signing of such an agreement by Mr. Lukashenko would lead to the de facto annexation of Belarus. If Lithuania does not recognize the president, does not recognize her elections, Lithuania should not recognize international agreements with the signature of an illegitimate president, ”said G. Landsbergis at the presidential press conference.
