A truck with a 19-ton tank was operating in Karmėlava: diesel was spilled, the Šešuva river was right here.

Diesel is leaking from the tank, police department guards were quick to report Wednesday night.

The Fire and Rescue Department in turn 15 minutes reported that 3 tanker crews, a staff car and traffic were partially restricted at the crash site.

The first firefighters to arrive disconnected the battery, an attempt was made to seal the tank, the road was covered with sorbent and barriers were built in the river. A crane will be used to lift the tractor.

As Džiuginta Vaitkevičienė, a representative of the Kaunas Fire and Rescue Board, told BNS, there are numerous fire brigades, civil safety and environmental specialists working at the site.

“The river is protected by absorbent barriers that prevent pollutants from entering the water and soil,” said a firefighter.

According to her, civil protection specialists are trying to get sawdust to collect the pollutants and are looking for a hoist to open the tank.

Kaunas County Police Representative Odeta Vaitkevičienė told BNS that people were not injured during the incident, that traffic was not restricted.

It soon became clear that only about one cubic meter of fuel could enter the environment. This amount of pollutants has been controlled and has not been able to cause real damage to the environment. Kęstutis Celiešius, the head of the Jonava Environmental Protection Inspectorate of the Kaunas Board of the Department of Environmental Protection, who personally visited the site, mentioned that only the ground was damaged.

In the afternoon a powerful crane has already arrived at the scene of the accident that will try to lift the overturned tanker.
