“We can confirm that today is around 0 o’clock. 30 minutes. We have been informed of the kidnapping in Birmingham city center,” West Midlands Police said in a statement.

Soon from the same area, where there are many popular restaurants, nightclubs and bars, a “string of other crashes” was reported and the incident was “declared a major incident,” according to the statement.

“We know of a chain of injuries, but at the moment we cannot say how many of them and with what intensity [sužeista]. However, all rescue services work together at the scene and make sure that all the injured receive medical attention, ”added the police.

The incident followed a series of previous attacks in which people were injured or killed with knives. On June 26, six people, including a police officer, were injured in Glasgow, Scotland.

A week earlier, three people had been stabbed in Reding, west London. The police charged a man and linked the crime to terrorism.

Last year, there were two terrorism-related attacks in Britain.

In November, a jihadist convicted of terrorist crimes in central London, who was released prematurely, stabbed five people, two of whom died. The police shot the attacker.

In February last year, London police killed another assailant who wounded three people with a knife.

The vast majority of serious crimes in Britain are committed with knives and other cold weapons because the laws on the acquisition of firearms are very strict.

In Birmingham, an ethnically mixed city, home to more than a million people, gang violence has erupted in recent years. In January 2003, a gang fired an illegal semi-automatic weapon at members of another gang. Then two passerby teenagers died.

“Fighting groups”

Cara Curran, a witness to the events on Sunday night, told AFP that she saw the fighting groups and heard about “racial insults.”

“It just came to our attention then. It didn’t really feel like a fight. There were a lot of people on top of each other, not against each other,” he said.

Police and other services arrived quickly and the scene was fenced off.

British television reports show large fenced-off areas in the city center and police officers working the scene.

“It remains to be seen what happened, and it may be some time before we can confirm anything,” West Midlands police said. She also said she had no information on reports that shots were fired during the incident.

“At this initial stage, one should not speculate about the reasons for the incident,” the police added.
