Air Force training in Ukraine almost turns into catastrophe: mid-air fighter collides with road sign

A makeshift runway was installed on the M06 highway from Kiev to Chop, near the Hungarian border, during a Ukrainian Air Force exercise on August 27.

The fighter shot at the traffic signal.

Two Su-27 heavy fighters landed in front of a large crowd of television cameras and ordinary spectators.

The people who saw the show became witnesses of the extraordinary situation: the fighter descending with the entire helmet obstructed the traffic signal. The mark wrapped around the edge of the air intake, causing minor damage to the casing.

If the impact had been only a few centimeters below, the traffic signal could have been included in one of the turbojet engines.

Usually foreign objects entering it damage it and the lost energy brings the plane down.

A great catastrophe has been averted

At such altitudes, planes are usually controlled, but in this case the collision occurred during landing, one meter above the ground.

This could have turned into a full-scale catastrophe, as there is no room for the fighter pilot to maneuver at such altitudes.

The disaster was avoided only because the pilot “reached the top ten.”

“All the danger signs were turned off at the prepared runway site. The crash pilot started landing too early. It made it difficult for the usual road marking off the road,” Ukrainian officials spoke about the incident.

The track was chosen by the situation of the country

Due to the conflict situation in Ukraine, each exercise is extraordinary. The objective of these exercises was to prepare the air force for situations in which the airfields of military bases were destroyed.

In this case, another infrastructure would be used: roads.

The Air Force prepares to find obstacles and strange objects on the makeshift runways. The pilots are trained to know when to descend, as there are no usual signs of the start and end of the runway.

Training: a moment for up to dozens of victims

During training, representatives of the air force landed on the spectators.

Due to the high risk of accidents during aviation holidays, such practices are prohibited.

The people gathered did not miraculously fall victim to a possible catastrophe.
