About 40 protesters were arrested on Friday, but only half of them will face charges, the ministry said.

Byelorussian human rights group Viasna has confirmed reports of arrests and noted that most of those detained protested peacefully. The group said there was violence against some protesters arrested during student demonstrations.

Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko has said he won the August 9 presidential election, in which he said he won 80 percent. voters’ votes. He has ruled the country for more than a quarter of a century.

However, the majority of Belarusians believe that the election results were rigged, and that is why there is a wave of protests in the country. The European Union (EU) refuses to recognize the election results.

Most of the recent protests were led by students who returned to their educational institutions after summer break. The Ministry of Education has threatened to negotiate with the universities for their role in the protests.

The protesters plan to hold another large rally on Sunday. Tens of thousands of people participated in protests last week, marching peacefully through the streets of the country.
