Typhoon Maysak brought heavy rains across the country this week. The images show a street flooded with water in the port city of Gangwon, Wonsan.

Saturday’s edition of state-run Rodong Sinmun said the country’s leaders had decided to punish “irresponsible” municipal and provincial officials who had prevented a “serious incident that had claimed many lives.”

It is not reported how many people died, were injured or disappeared.

According to the newspaper, despite instructions from the Workers’ Party headed by North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, officials “did not urgently organize work to identify properties at risk and evacuate the entire population.”

According to him, “it was decided to impose severe partisan, administrative and legal sanctions on those responsible for the victims.”

Typhoon Maysak also slammed into South Korea, killing at least two people. More than 2,200 people were evacuated to temporary shelters in the southern city of Busan.

Due to poor infrastructure and deforestation, North Korea is generally more affected by floods and other natural disasters than its southern neighbor.

A Seoul-based fugitive from North Ahn Chan-il told AnP news agency that North Korea’s leadership is punishing local officials to blame them.

“The aim is to show that Kim Jong Un is never doing anything wrong, and only subordinates who do not follow his instructions are to blame for the damage,” he said.
