This criminal case has been separated from the ongoing pre-trial investigation into the Alytus fire, the Attorney General’s Office announced Tuesday.
State fire supervision was not guaranteed.
Algirdas Bautronis, the head of the Alytus Fire and Rescue Service, and Saulius Mockevičius, the lead specialist for this service, who previously served as the head of the State Fire Supervision Division of the County Fire and Rescue Board from Alytus, they will soon take over.
According to the pre-trial investigation, the defendants did not classify this company as a group of objects to be inspected and did not include it in the annual planned technical fire inspection plans. This did not ensure state fire supervision and fire regime in the specified part of the building, did not take legal and technical measures and avoided a large-scale fire in October 2019, did not allow to identify / detect this fire, locate it in the stage initial and prevent its spread.

Mockevičius were aware of the activities of UAB Ekologistika – recycling of 25,000 tons of used tires per year in the building – Pramonės str. 1, Alytus, but not they took action, no effort was made, even minimal, to shoot in 2019. The officers who carried out the pre-trial investigation in this case established that since 2012, 9 fires had already occurred in Alytus, in the building marked with Pramonės street number 1, where both the UAB Ekologistika and the territory were located, officials of the Alytus Fire and Rescue Service had information about. The largest fire broke out on October 16, 2019. Its consequences for people and the environment are enormous, and the damage to the state exceeds 5 million euros.
In order to investigate all the circumstances of the Alytus fire, a group of four specialized prosecutors was formed at the Kaunas Regional Prosecutor’s Office, who led and organized the pre-trial investigation. The pre-trial investigation is carried out in various directions, various versions of the cause of the fire are investigated, the actions and decisions taken by various institutions that have supervised the economic entity are evaluated.
The effects of the fire on people and the environment are enormous, with an estimated damage to the state of more than 5 million euros.
The investigation controlled and coordinated by the prosecutors of the Kaunas Regional Prosecutor’s Office is carried out by officers of the Criminal Police Crime Investigation Division, the Criminal Police Economic Crime Investigation Division and the Criminal Investigation Division of Organized Crimes of the Alytus County Chief Police Commissariat. In this pre-trial investigation, 5 people were charged.
The separate case was transferred to the Alytus Chamber of the Alytus District Court.
