The girl’s aunt, who did not want her identity revealed to the public, told Delfi that on August 31. her granddaughter moved into a double room in VMU’s dorm. However, the deplorable state of the isolated room that is seen provoked many negative emotions.

“My granddaughter, a future first year student at Vytautas Magnus University, moved into a double room. We are well aware that a bedroom does not have to be a 5-star hotel and that it is normal that there is no shower or toilet in the room, but it makes you want to cry when you see such a room. The niece has already been warned by several friends that there are cockroaches in the bedroom. The room costs € 2 per night, that is about € 60 per month. The price is not high, but this quantity is not adequate in terms of quality ratio ”, assured the woman.

According to her, the niece is already looking for another room and will move in, but instead someone else is likely to move in who cannot rent a more dignified room. The aunt has no doubt that the motivation to study disappears in such a room.

“We knew that the academy dormitories had not been renovated, but we did not think they had not been renovated since construction began. There is also a renovated dormitory, but it gives priority to foreign students. Of course, the easiest thing would be to say disgust, don’t live, but it is no longer a question of aesthetics, but of hygiene and safety ”, explained the relative.

The woman also added that often the students take care of the rooms themselves and she really understands that it is possible to glue new wallpaper, glue chips, repaint the closet, but in her opinion, not all freshmen know how. lay parquet, render the ceiling and destroy cockroaches.

“It is true that the common areas (kitchen, bathrooms, showers) are neat. From what I have heard, that room is not the only one. Sure, the condition of the room depends on the students who lived before, but repairing the room is fundamentally a concern for the university. In my opinion, this is the exploitation of students and the lack of respect for a person seeking a higher education, “said the aunt.

Ina Žurkuvienė, Head of Integrated Communication at Vytautas Magnus University, noted that although she had only passed the first stage of admission to higher education institutions, the number of first-year courses at Vytautas Magnus University increased by 30% Compared to last year: 1,296 participants signed contracts with the university.

“This is the second best result among Lithuanian universities. As the number of students and those wishing to stay in dormitories increased, the decision was made to offer additional double rooms in the dormitories of the former Alexander Stulginski University (now VMU Agricultural Academy), which have yet to be renovated. This decision was made at the request of the students in order to provide them with accommodation at the lowest possible price: 60 Eur / month. it is the final price of a double room ”, he said.

This is how they shared a previous Delfi article comparing the prices of university residences.

According to I. Žurkuvienė, in 2019. all the rooms in the VMU dorm no. 8 (Studentų st. 5). There the floors, walls, ceilings have been renovated, new furniture, refrigerators have been built and wireless internet has been introduced. “This year, the Ministry of Education, Science and Sports of the Republic of Lithuania did not allocate funds for the renovation of the dormitories at VMU. 2020 the university improved part of the infrastructure on its own. The renovation works in the remaining bedrooms are planned in the near future, but it will also depend on the funds allocated by the state ”.

The representative also assured that the cockroaches are not present in any of the dormitories and if the students notice them in the future, they should immediately contact the dormitory administration, who will take care of the eradication of pests immediately.
