In the Panevėžys “Lietkabelis” team this season we will see an American competing Troy’ų Barniesa, which has Lithuanian roots.
The 31-year-old, 201cm tall striker’s ancestors are from Lithuania, but later emigrated to the United States (USA). In an interview with the website kklietkabelis.lt, T. Barnies stated that before coming to Lithuania, he already knew the colors of our flag and did not hesitate to list them.
The interlocutor also spoke of his admiration for the game of Mindaugas Kuzminskas, for himself, for his style of play and promised the fans that he would do his best to win all the matches in the home arena.
– Why did you decide to sign a contract with Lietkabelis?
– The first reason was that the club participates in the European Cup. I competed in this tournament when I defended the honor of Ventspils, and I got a taste of the FIBA Champions League fights in Olaj. The opportunity to play the European Cup with such a strong Lithuanian team was a very important factor for me. Also the level of LKL is excellent. As soon as I arrived in Europe, I immediately heard about Lithuanian basketball and how good it is.
– What are your memories of playing in the European Cup?
– Basketball is different, much more intense. There is a very noticeable difference between home and away games. All basketball players are very talented and don’t make mistakes. It must be 100 percent. ready and focused, because otherwise you will be punished. The feeling before the game is different and the level is the highest. I love it.
– Competitors like Virtus or Lokomotiv-Kuban await the group of the European Cup. What do you think of the chances of going to the next stage?
– I know it will be very difficult. The key is to win your home games. You also need to win at least a few victories for the guests. I mean, I’m not going to lose a single game, but that’s basketball and there will be losses.
– Before coming to Lithuania, what did you know about this country?
– I knew what the flag looked like.
– How is she?
– Yellow green red.
– What else did you know?
– He knew about basketball. Kuzminskas played for the Knicks and I knew him before he came to the NBA. I liked his style of play. I knew it was a small country and close to Latvia because it competed there. I will learn much more.
– Do you think the people in Lithuania and Latvia are very different?
– I was in Lithuania when we competed in the Baltic Basketball League – it was the beginning of my professional career. We play against Šiauliai. I was just here to play and left immediately. I think people are like Latvians.
– Self-isolation with other foreigners of the team awaited you upon your arrival. How was that period?
– We immediately went to Dubingiai and we were there on the farm, where it is really beautiful. I read articles about the situation of the other team and saw that our club had created the best conditions. We had a good time, two tests were negative and we were able to start training. The time was really fun.
– Did you know any Lietkabelis players before your arrival?
– No, this is the first time that I have not met a single basketball player. I saw Vinales on the field playing in Estonia. It is a new experience for me to meet all the colleagues.
– What can fans expect from you?
– I’m not the player who scores 30 or 40 points each. I do a lot of invisible things in the field and I am a true black worker. I do what others may not want to do. I am a triple, but I like to accumulate points and close. I’m a true fighter, that’s what best describes me. I do my best so that only the team wins.
– What is your personality?
– I am a calm and funny boy. I like to joke, I like it even when it pulls me out of my teeth, then I laugh myself. I am a boy who can unite others. I am the oldest player in the team, so I want to become a link between Lithuanians and foreigners.
– What type of basketball will Lietkabelis show?
– We will work hard in the field. We will be very aggressive, we will run to a fast attack, we will share the ball well. We will not have an outstanding leader, everyone will be able to take the initiative.
– What can you promise the fans?
– I don’t like to promise, but I can say that we will do our best in every game. We want the fans that come to the arena to see us win. We will try to win every game at home.
